I Support No Fault Divorce
I recently met with my constituent Alyson. Alyson shared with me her concerns about the current laws regarding divorce. I agree with her, and many constituents who have also been in touch with me about it, that the current laws do not work.
Currently even when a married couple mutually agree that their marriage is over, if they want to get divorced they must either assign blame to each other or wait a minimum of two years while living apart. This often means couples have to resort to making a hard situation harder, as they invent reasons to blame the marriage breakdown on each other for the sake of the justice system.
This is a bad system, not fit for the modern day. I therefore support the introduction of ‘no fault divorce’ to enable couples to separate and divorce with dignity. It will remove the need to find reasons to blame and will make a difficult time easier.
